Be Aware of Hidden Moving Costs - Why you need a Not to Exceed.

Most moving companies are pretty open about what they charge per pound for a long distance move or their hourly labor rates for local moving but at the end of the day when the final bill is calculated you may be in for a shock. Ask questions before scheduling your move and make sure you get everything in writing.
On top of the local hourly labor rate or the dollar per pound that you are being charged for a long distance move, all your costs should be outlined for you by the mover you select. The problem is that when it comes time to pay, the moving company may charge you for services you thought were included or were not made aware of; an extra credit card processing fee, a long carry fee, a shuttle, a fuel fee or worse, something they made up. These charges are not uncommon but should be explained prior to your move.
Whether you are moving locally or long distance these things need to be in writing long before the movers show up at your door on move day.
When you are moving in California, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) regulations require all movers to provide each consumer with a written "Not to Exceed" price, sometimes called an "Important Notice About Your Move", before the move commences. The move costs included and excluded will be clearly disclosed on your Not to Exceed document. Your mover will have you sign this form before the move begins. If your mover does not give you a Not to Exceed (NTE) document at least three days prior to your move, this is the time to ask for one. If you schedule your less than three days before you need to move, you still want to make sure you get a copy and sign a NTE before the movers begin work.
If something changes during the course of your move, the movers may have you sign a Change Order form. If you add an extra stop, you are not as prepared as planned or have more items to move than you told your estimator, your mover may ask you to sign a Change Order. This form overrides the NTE but covers the mover for any additional time and expense on their end and lets you know of any additional charges or changes to the final move cost.
