Information about Moving Insurance from your San Diego Mover

Moving Insurance

If you are moving locally within San Diego, moving out of state or internationally across the world, knowing what, if any insurance coverage you have on your possessions is something you need to ask from the very beginning of your moving process. In other words, find out right away if you need to get supplementary moving insurance. DO NOT wait until move day. At minimum you will need to buy any add-on moving insurance coverage at least three days prior to you move.

Remember that no matter how careful you are in choosing movers, accidents can happen, boxes can be bumped or dropped or shift during transit. What can be controlled is making sure you're adequately covered should an accident occur.

Be prepared with a list of all your valuables, their condition and value when you discuss moving insurance with either your mover or an insurance provider. Also, keep in mind that any boxes that you pack versus boxes that are packed by your mover are not going to be covered, so pack your boxes very well or have the mover pack everything for you. Not only will your belongings have better insurance coverage but it will also reduce the amount of time you have to spend packing everything up.

No matter where you are moving to, insurance can help protect the things that you have worked so hard for over the years.Sometimes your renters or home owners insurance may provide some insurance during your move but this is rare. Not to mention you do not want to ever file an insurance claim on your home or renters unless its a total loss of your home and ALL of your belongings. You can generally purchase moving insurance through your mover or you may want to look into buying third-party moving insurance coverage.

Most of the time, basic liability coverage is provided at no additional cost. You need to clarify what your carrier covers and what is not covered. In some states you may get coverage of 60 cents per pound per item. In some cases it can be as low as 10 cents per pound or no moving insurance coverage at all.

The cost of additional moving insurance is based on the overall valuation of the household goods you want covered. Sometimes you can chose the items you want to carry additional insurance other times the insurer will only allow you to buy coverage on the entire shipment.

Just like any other insurance policy, moving insurance takes a fee and then provides you cash payment if something is damaged during your move. There are many different types of moving insurance coverage available. Make sure you read up on the differences and purchase the correct insurance for your move. We suggest purchasing additional third-party moving insurance through MovingInsurance.com.

Keep in Mind:

Some of your actions may limit your mover's liability. These include:

  • Packing perishable, dangerous or hazardous materials in your household goods without your mover's knowledge.
  • Packing your own boxes. You may consider packing your own household goods articles to reduce your costs, but if the articles you pack are damaged, it may be more difficult to establish your claim against the mover for the boxes you pack.
  • Choosing Released Value coverage when your household goods are valued at more than 60 cents per pound per article.
  • Failing to notify your mover in writing about articles of extraordinary value.
Do not sign a delivery receipt for your household goods if it contains any language about releasing or discharging your mover or its agents from liability. By law, you have nine (9) months to file a written claim. Strike out this kind of language or refuse delivery until a proper receipt is provided.

Report loss and damage promptly. You have nine (9) months following either the date of delivery, or the date on which the shipment should have been delivered, to file a written claim.

Interstate movers are required to participate in a dispute resolution or arbitration program to address your loss and damage claims. If your mover does not provide you with information on its program, ask for it-movers are required to provide a concise, easy-to-read summary.
