Hiring A Helper

movinghelper.jpg

You need help moving and think you cannot afford a "real" mover. The cost of not using a licensed and insured mover can cost you much more in the end. If the people you hire do not have the proper licensing or the right kind of insurance, you might end up calling, Turko.

Finding an affordable San Diego mover is not difficult if you do a little homework, finding a legal, honest reliable mover is a little bit more challenging but can be done with little work.

You can check the legal status of a California moving company by going to the California Public Utilities Commission website (http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/puc/) but what about when you are looking for a moving helper to load your rental truck or to assist you to move into self-storage, you look on craigslist or Hire-A-Helper website. Be careful, this may cost you more than you save.

These "helpers" do not have to be licensed unless they provide you with a truck and drive your belongings to the new location. Since they are not licensed there is no authority regulating their service.

These "helpers" often advertise as being Licensed, bonded and insured. "Licensed, bonded and insured" remains the catch phrase of the marginal service providers that is designed to press a hot button with the consumer. What does this really mean?

Being bonded means that a bonding company has secured money that is available to the consumer in the event they file a claim against the company. The secured money is in the control of the state, a bond, and not under the control of the company. Let's say that you hire a cleaning company and they end up stealing your Nintendo Wii. Well, you would file a claim against the company and, after an investigation, would be paid out by this bond. In other words, you need to get a conviction against their "employee" to get any money to cover your loss.

This is when you must ask the right questions.

Do they have workmans comp insurance on ALL the people working not just for the owner of the "business"? If they do not have the proper insurance and someone is hurt while working for you; you are responsible for their medical bills.

What forms of payment do they take?  A huge red flag goes up if they only take cash. If they offer a cash discount, that's great but if they ONLY take cash that's a warning sign.

When they provide you with a written contract prior to beginning work? A verbal agreement leads to he said, she said. Get everything in writing even if it's only that you will pay X per hour with a 3 hour minimum for example.

To reduce the amount of homework you put into finding good help, call a local San Diego moving company. As a local mover in San Diego, they will not only be able to provide you with a truck, help you with experienced movers AND be properly insured, they probably even take American Express.
