Finding a Mover

Finding a Mover

Moving is already a stressful event in your life. You need to make sure that the moving company that you choose is not only going to do a good job but they are not going to break the bank.

The best way to get an accurate idea of your overall move cost is to have an in-home estimate. You will want to have at least two estimators come to your home and get at least 2 over the phone quotes once you are prepared with the information from the estimator. Be aware of movers who do not list an address on their website or does not have local representative to meet you at your home.

Prepare a list of questions to ask the estimator and remember to ask them.

You will want to ask the estimator about his or her moving experience. How long have they been in the industry, how long have they been preparing estimates?

Ask about specific possessions you are concerned about. How will they handle the moving of grandma's antique china cabinet or that slate patio table top for example.

Ask about the company itself. How long have they been in business? Are they licensed by the state and fully insured. Check them out - visit the Better Business Bureau website, check out the state licensing authority and also check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (http://www.protectyourmove.gov/).

Make sure you get your estimate in writing. Even if you are just moving around the corner, you want to make sure that the services are itemized and add up to a final cost.

Once you have met with and spoken to several movers, make sure you are comparing apples to apples when it comes to your overall move cost. If you do not understand something, ask for clarification. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure the mover you chose puts your final estimate in writing. Unless you make changes to the services you use, it will be a binding price.
