Packing Books

Before starting the packing of books, it is a good opportunity to reevaluate the books you would like to keep. Keep in mind that books can be heavy and it will increase the weight of your load, thus increasing your transportation cost. Consider selling some books at a yard sale, donating them to charity, or selling to a secondhand bookstore.

Use only small boxes for books -- they get very heavy, very fast. Filling large boxes with books will only slow down the movers. Stack books together, pack upright with open edges and bound ends alternating. Fill in small spaces with smaller books.

A good rule of thumb is - if you can not lift it, the movers probably shouldn't be lifting it either. Using big boxes has a risk of breaking the box and damaging the books by falling on the ground. Smaller boxes are much easier to move and navigate with. Also you can separate your books by genre, so that you can easily arrange them in your new home.
