Hiring a Move Manager

Using a Senior Move Manager

seniors.pngMove Managers are professionals that assists older adults and their families with the emotional and physical aspects of moving. They often have backgrounds in gerontology, social work, health care, nursing and psychology, others come to this industry from the corporate world of project management, technology, accounting or marketing.  Move Managers provide a multi-faceted approach to the move process: from space planning in the beginning to post-move support and advocacy. They minimize the chaos and stress associated with moving by addressing all aspects of the move process. They are responsible to for creating and executing a seamless action plan, customized to the client's wishes. A move manager can provide as little or as much support for your projects as you desire, as she has considerable experience that can save you money and free you up to focus on the elements of the project you plan to handle yourself or with the help of family and friends.

Using a move manager does add costs to the move that depend greatly on the size of the project. However, the more complex a move, the more a senior move manager can save the client in time and money by bringing efficiency, experience and speed to each step of the process. This can save hours of time charged by movers, avoid needless expenses of moving items that won’t fit in the new home, and particularly help out-of-town family members minimize travel and time needed in town to assist with the move. A senior move manager can provide a free initial consultation to discuss the project and determine how they can provide services to support your needs.

Although specific services vary, most Move Managers help with some or all of the following:

•Developing an overall moving plan
•Organizing, sorting and downsizing
•Arranging for the profitable disposal of unwanted items through auction, estate sale, buy-out, consignment, donation, or a combination of the above
•Interviewing, scheduling and overseeing movers
•Arranging shipments and storage
•Supervise and oversight of professional packing
•Unpacking and setting up the new home
•Related services, such as cleaning, waste removal, shopping, senior escort, assisting with selection of a realtor and helping prepare the home to be sold.

It's virtually impossible to calculate what a specific move might cost, as the fee can vary considerably by geographic region and the services requested. Some Senior Move Managers charge on an hourly basis, while others prefer to package the cost of the entire job at one price. It will all depend on the Move Manager that you choose.

Before hiring a move manager, you will want to ask if they are fully insured for liability and workers' compensation? How do they charge? (Fees should be provided in writing to the consumer or responsible party prior to providing services). Will they provide you with a written contract?

To find a move manager near you, contact the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) at http://www.nasmm.org or 877.606.2766.
