Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a type of infection that is common among people of all ages. There is an encasing, called the conjunctiva, around your eyelids that can become infected. Our eye doctors at Overlake EyeCare in Bellevue would like to answer some of the common questions we encounter related to pink eye.

How Is Pink Eye Caused?

There are several reasons why our eyes can become irritated or infected with pink eye. It could be viral, which can similar to what causes the common cold or from bacterial organisms entering into the eye. It could also result from an allergic reaction to dust, pollen, or other irritants.

How Contagious Is Pink Eye?

The most contagious forms of pink eye are bacterial and viral. You can reduce the likelihood of spreading it to someone else by avoiding rubbing your eyes and by washing your hands with warm soap and water often. While it can't be prevented altogether, keep your distance from anyone who appears to have pink eye. Common symptoms can include:

  • Excessive tears
  • Red or swollen eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Burning or tingling

Consult our optometrists if you are experiencing the symptoms of pink eye.

What Treatment Is Best For Conjunctivitis?

Depending on the type, there are a few different treatments or aids to deal with pink eye. Viral pink eye will need some time to run its course, but you can use a cool washcloth to help soothe the discomfort. An eye drop or special ointment can help bacterial pinkeye or possibly antibiotic pills. Returning to work or school should only happen when you are symptom-free. You will feel uncomfortable for a few days, but most cases of pink eye are mild, and you will feel better as time passes.
