How Cataracts Develop

As we age, protein deposits can build up in the lens of the eye. In the beginning, these can appear as cloudy areas that may make objects and people look blurry and cause colors to appear faded. Over time, the cataracts mature. This further blocks light from entering your eye and causes a loss of visual acuity. You may have trouble reading signs and driving at night. Individuals with cataracts also experience problems with glare.

Who Needs Surgery for Cataracts

If you have early-stage cataracts, eyeglasses or contacts may be able to correct your vision so that you can see clearly. However, as the cataracts grow and mature, you may find it difficult to perform everyday tasks and drive. At this point, you should seriously consider cataract surgery to remove your cataracts.

Benefits of Cataracts Surgery

Cataract Surgery completely removes the cataracts from your eyes. This is accomplished by removing your natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. Once the procedure is complete, you will be able to see clearly, and the cataracts will not regrow.

Understanding Cataract Surgery

The most common type of cataract surgery performed by our surgeon is phacoemulsification. This type of eye surgery involves making a small incision in the surface of the eye with the same type of laser that is used in LASIK eye surgery. One the incision has been made, the eye surgeon then inserts a probe that emits ultrasound waves to break apart the lens of the eye. The small lens pieces are then removed using suction. Once the natural lens has been completely removed, a new lens with your specific prescription is inserted in the same place as your natural lens. This surgery usually takes about 30 minutes, and it does not require any stitches.

If the cataract is too large or too dense for phacoemulsification, our eye surgeon may opt to use another technique called extracapsular surgery for cataracts. This involves making a slightly larger incision in the surface of the eye and removing the lens in one piece. After the lens is removed, the new lens is placed into the eye and small stitches are used to close the incision site. This type of cataract removal surgery takes slightly longer to heal due to the size of the incision.
