Keratoconus

Treating Keratoconus

Keratoconus is one of the disorders of the eye that leads to blurry vision. It happens when the cornea, the clear front of the eye that focuses light, thins it's normally round shape becomes distorted in a cone shape. That can lead to blurry vision and sensitivity to light and glare. Keratoconus can make it difficult for a patient to read, drive, or carry out daily tasks. Dr. Seema Mohanan at Optics&EYECARE in Ashburn is uniquely qualified to treat patients with keratoconus and other disorders with misshapen corneas.

What are the Symptoms of Keratoconus?

Patients who develop Keratoconus notice that their vision is blurry and they are often sensitive to light. A need to frequently change prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses may also be a warning sign. Sudden vision cloudiness may also be traced to keratoconus. If a patient’s cornea swells quickly that may also be a dangerous indicator because a swollen cornea can lead to scarring. An optometrist can help determine what is behind those types of changes and how to treat them.

Why Does Keratoconus Happen?

Keratoconus happens when tiny protein fibers called collagen just can’t hold the cornea in place anymore. Researchers aren’t exactly sure what triggers keratoconus. They believe it can be caused by environmental factors as well as genetic factors. Studies have shown that one in ten keratoconus patients have a parent with the same condition.

How is Keratoconus Treated?

In the early stages, keratoconus can usually be treated with prescription glasses or contact lenses. But keratoconus is a progressive disease. As time goes on gas-permeable or other rigid lenses may be prescribed to help control the curvature of the cornea. Eventually, the patient might need a cornea transplant when the cone-shaped bulge in the cornea can no longer be corrected. A comprehensive eye examination by an optometrist can determine the best course of treatment for this condition.

  • "If I could give them 6 stars, I would. From the moment we walked in, the entire staff was very friendly, caring, attentive, and professional, not like your typical doctor's office where you feel like just another number. Astrid, Salma, and Natalia were very thorough and meticulous in taking care of my partner, as was the optometrist. My partner now has 20/20 perfect vision and couldn't be happier. Highly recommended."
