Blurred Vision Treatment with our Ashburn Optometrist
There are a number of causes of blurred vision, some of which are extremely transient and will resolve themselves, and some of which are more serious. Outside of a few specific circumstances, blurred vision is not an emergency, but you should see your optometrist as soon as possible. Optics&EYECARE, located in Ashburn, VA, offers expert visits to an eye doctor for patients with a variety of complaints.
Causes of Blurred Vision
A number of refractive errors can cause blurred vision at different distances:
- Myopia
- Hyperopia
- Astigmatism
- Presbyopia
These errors are by far the most common causes of blurred vision. Refractive errors are usually not caused by any underlying condition, and they are not themselves considered a health problem. However, there are other conditions, including some serious diseases that share this symptom:
- Chronic dry eye
- Pregnancy
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Detached retina
- Cardiac disorders
Certain types of blurry eyes are more common in some conditions than others. For example, cloudy vision is often associated with cataracts, which cause this appearance when the lens of the eye starts to turn opaque. Treatment for eye conditions varies from nothing to surgery or systemic treatments aimed at the underlying causes. Temporary, mild blurred vision when you are tired or out in the sun for a long period of time may just indicate eyestrain. See your eye doctor if you have other symptoms or if your symptoms continue.
Regular Eye Exams and Blurred Vision
If you suddenly find that your vision is blurry, you should see an eye doctor right away. However, many of the conditions that can cause blurred vision, including the more serious ones, can be detected at a regular eye exam. Ideally, it shouldn't take blurry eyes to get you to see the optometrist! Regular exams screen for many more things than just a new glasses prescription.
People with modestly blurry vision that came on slowly may also not recognize the changes in their sight. This can result in eyestrain from trying to compensate for the condition or even safety issues such as driving without adequate vision correction. Research also indicates that people with even minor visual difficulties are at a social disadvantage, which is just one more reason to get your eyes checked out on a regular basis.
