WHY ARE THESE FOODS NOT ALLOWED? Part II

We need to eat foods that will not spike blood sugar and create a fast spike in insulin. Those are the foods on your GHS plan. They create a slow, steady release of insulin that will not cause the body to store fat. Many of the foods that aren’t present on our plan are removed, first and foremost, for that reason.

Your grains like oatmeal, pasta, corn and bread, as well as items like alcohol, bananas, beans, dried fruits, grapes, honey, juices, potatoes and rice, all fall into this category. Many other products do, as well, because of added sugars. Yogurt is one of the worst. There are so many added sugars in yogurt that it’s more like a dessert than the original health food it was intended to be.

For now, though, dairy, wheat and soy have all been removed from our plan because they are highest on the list of food allergens. You may think you would know if you had an issue with these foods, but you could be very wrong.

These foods create a host of symptoms in people resulting from food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances. Most clients don’t even realize they have an issue with these foods until they remove them from their diet, give their bodies time to heal, then attempt to re-introduce them.

Food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances can produce a lot of inflammation, as well, making weight loss more difficult. In fact, food sensitivities are a top cause of weight gain.

The role of the hard to digest anti-nutrient proteins, known as lectins and serpinins, found in grains and seeds can actually alter your gut lining in order to survive. This is why most people with autoimmune diseases don’t do well with grains or other seeds.

They should also eliminate legumes (meaning beans, peas and peanuts) for the same reason – they are a form of seed.

If you are gluten sensitive, the inflammatory process that takes place after you eat it actually creates excessive cortisol (which is your stress hormone). Cortisol increases insulin, thereby making it easier to store central fat, which is the visceral fat we measure on your body composition that hangs onto your heart, liver, pancreas, kidneys, etc.

And every time cortisol (your stress hormone) increases to fight inflammation, it tells the liver to dump sugar into your blood stream. The result is that you have to make more insulin to compensate for that sugar. In turn, insulin stores your food as fat, which traps you in a vicious hormonal cycle. 

Soy is one of the most genetically-modified foods on the market and also highly estrogenic, meaning it contains a high concentration of a type of plant estrogen that is similar to human estrogen. Soy can bind to the estrogen receptors in the body and can effect your estrogen activity. You see, weight loss isn’t just about eating less food to lose weight.

And, lastly, one of the most common questions… “Why can’t I drink alcohol?” When alcohol is consumed, it is burned first as a fuel source before your body burns carbs or fats. Since alcohol is used as the primary source of energy, those excess carbs and fats end up being stored as fat. In other words, the body already received the fuel it needed from the alcohol.

We hope this answers a lot of the questions many of you may have about why certain foods are not a part of the Genesis plan. The more you understand, the more you will be able to know why you are doing what you are doing and not just see your journey as a collection of restrictions. There really is a science behind it, which is why we say, "It’s not about counting calories, it’s all about how foods affect your body chemistry!”
