Metabolism Boosters and Busters – Part 2
Certain foods slow down digestive processes and increase free radical damage. The body actually recognizes and processes inflammatory foods as toxins. Eating these triggers your body to engage its fight or flight response, increasing your stress hormone (cortisol) production and slowing metabolic function. That’s one of the reasons why your Genesis Health Solutions weight loss plan is anti-inflammatory. The first thing to consider is you may be eating the wrong foods.
Six Worst Foods for Weight Loss
For instance, fruit juice is one of those items many believe to be healthy for themselves and their children. However, drinking juice will cause you to consume far too much sugar and, in turn, ruin your metabolism.
To provide you with some perspective, one 8-oz glass of juice contains about 30 grams of sugar, while soda contains 28 grams. Be sure to watch for hidden sugars in alcoholic beverages or mixes, bottled caffeinated or coffee drinks, energy drinks. The sugar content in yogurts and condiments, like ketchup, is often a surprise to many. Always read those labels!
Eating many whole grains, which are the staple of the American diet all the way from breakfast foods to a midnight snack, also kills metabolism. Compounds like gluten, starch and phytic acid in these grains can disrupt metabolism. In addition, these products always come with other added ingredients and synthetic vitamins and minerals that can be hard to metabolize properly.
Inflammation, which is the root of all disease, can occur if you are gluten sensitive. These starches can turn to sugar quickly, causing you to continually have cravings and overeat. Steer clear of all processed vegetable oils. Soybean and canola oil seem to be in almost everything on the shelves, because they are cheap in production. Not only are they heavily refined, but they are also full of omega 6, which are inflammatory when out of balance. In the American diet, they are way out of balance.
There are several chip and cracker products on the market made from things like beans, nuts, seeds, sweet potatoes and vegetables. These chip options can often appear to be healthier. However, don’t be fooled by the clever marketing. Between the vegetable oils and other additives (many of them synthetic or GMOs), most are total metabolism busters. They also contain a lot of Omega 6’s, as well as empty starches that break down into sugars.
Granola bars are really glorified candy bars. It might interest you to know that the honey used in granola is highly processed and can be a major source of weight gain. Texas A&M tested honey and found that 76% of it on the market contained no pollen whatsoever. It had also been so high temperature pasteurized that all the enzymes and nutrients were destroyed, making it no better than corn syrup!
Artificial sweeteners are probably one of the worse, if not the most deceiving. You are led to believe that you can satisfy your sweet tooth with no guilt or calories, when they are actually a major metabolism buster. They are known to increase appetite and are linked to dozens of adverse health effects and accelerated aging due to free radical damage.
Many have struggled giving up sodas and diet sodas, but they have also seen on the other side that there is life after chemical addiction! Many also have great stories of how much better they feel, and how much weight is lost, just by removing diet soda.
So, keep yourself informed, take notes on this information. It’s the best way to guard yourself against a tanking metabolism! Stay tuned for Metabolism Boosters and Busters – Part 3. We will look at ways to boost metabolism, and benefit from power foods.
