Here are some tools to help move us forward in dealing with the battles related to weight loss and renewing our commitment to good health.
“Be Realistic” - Instead of making one singular overwhelming goal, try setting smaller, attainable goals throughout the year. A healthy strategy might be that you just need to change one thing, get that down, then move onto the next. By making goals realistic, there is a greater probability of making lasting change throughout the year, because you are incorporating healthy behavior into your everyday life.
“Think Mindset, Not A Resolution” - With a resolution you can find it more difficult to forgive yourself and start over. Mindset is totally different. Mindset allows for positive growth over time, because it takes time to develop a whole new way of eating and living.
“Do Something That Terrifies You” - This is really about facing and overcoming your fears. When you set out to conquer a particular fear, it may “feel” scary in the moment. However, that fear starts to lose its power when you move into it. You won’t be “cured” the first time, but the fear will lessen with each attempt until you are no longer afraid.
“Overcome Procrastination” - Everyone procrastinates to some degree. According to Bryan Tracy, to produce at your maximum, you must resolve to engage in what he calls “creative procrastination.” You have to consciously and deliberately decide what tasks you are going to put off. Look at your daily schedule, and choose those things you are not going to do until you have completed other things that are more important.
“Complete Larger Tasks First” - Divide each task into bite-size pieces. Write down in sequence every part of your task, from the first little job to the final one that completes the task. Then discipline yourself to do #1 on your list. Taking action on the first step of a large task can make it easier to do the next step. Sometimes, just forcing yourself to start working on a major task will help you develop the momentum and energy necessary to work right through until the task is completed.
“The Salami-Slice Method” - Don’t try to do a large task in one time period. Instead, salami slice the task. Maybe a salami slice is making a grocery list for 3-4 days on Sunday night. Then another slice is going to the store after work on Monday. Each time you determine to accomplish a major task, resolve to complete one part of the task at a time.
“Develop A Sense Of Urgency” - One of the rarest and most valuable human motivators is a sense of urgency. Losing weight and getting healthy is urgent. Our health is of great importance. It is not something we want to keep putting off until later.
When these qualities become a part of who you are, you will be surprised at all the wonderful opportunities that will open up for you. It’s a new year everyone… time for a fresh start. You can conquer a healthy lifestyle of eating by making one decision at a time to take control of your life.
