Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition that affects the optic nerve. More than three million people across the country have this condition, but only about half even know it. Types of Glaucoma
The two most common types of glaucoma are explained in further detail below:
- Open-angle glaucoma: This form is the most prevalent, but it often has no warning signs, and only an optometrist can make a diagnosis. As a result, we always suggest scheduling annual comprehensive eye exams, especially if you're over 60.
- Angle-closure glaucoma: While not as common, this type of glaucoma is often considered a medical emergency. It happens when drainage isn't normal in the eyes, which results in a sudden spike of interocular pressure. This spike in pressure can damage the optic nerve, leading to blindness.
Warning Signs of Glaucoma
Left untreated, glaucoma can become very serious. If you notice any of the following symptoms, seek help immediately because you don't want to risk permanent vision loss:
- Loss of peripheral(side) vision (this is usually one of the first symptoms)
- Halos around lights
- Sudden vision loss
- Intense headaches, eye pain, nausea, or vomiting
Preventing Glaucoma
Glaucoma isn't completely preventable, but you can take steps to make it less likely. There are studies that indicate that plenty of exercise and excellent nutrition can help keep your eye pressure under control. Additionally, protecting your eyes with a high-quality pair of sunglasses to minimize UV light exposure can help. Avoiding smoking will also reduce your chances of suffering from glaucoma. The best thing you can do is schedule regular visits with our optometrist so we can evaluate your eye health.

While there isn't presently a cure for glaucoma, modern advancements have made living with this eye disease less compromising on your daily life. There are a variety of treatments out there, including prescription eye drops, medications, or using laser surgery.
